Here's an idea; A "Commonwealth brand" for Canada.

Great Britain has Vauxhall, Australia and New Zealand have Holden. I think Canada should get a slice of that action.

“But Canada is too small!”

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Canada’s “Commonwealth brand” would have more of a market than Holden.

Kinja'd!!!

We’ve even got a faily recognizable brand laying dormant in GM’s wealth of brand trademarks too, Acadian.

Kinja'd!!!

Basically, I want a Commodore. And an Astra VXR.

Plus, it would give a new breath of life to the V8 RWD, just build it in Oshawa or one of GM’s other Canadian plants. Canada currently doesn’t even get the SS, for some reason.

Kinja'd!!!

Plus, I think Buick-GMC dealers could use a lower down, more accessible brand now that Pontiac has bit the dust.

Think about it GM.

But isn’t basically everything sold under Holden basically a Chevy with a different badge?

Well, considering that a very large portion of US bound cars are actually Made In Canada, I agree. It’s only fair.

They could have a car division too and market themselves as the Canadian SAAB.

Born from jets motherfucker!

When anything along these lines happens, to my knowledge, it goes the opposite way. We get rebranded Holdens as Chevys, not the other way around.

Damn. Before you mentioned Acadian I had already thought of a new Vauxhall Holden name, Vaux-Holden.

Hmmm.

How about Acadi-Vaux-Holden?

Envoy!

Or, be like plane manufacturers of yore and just call it Vauxholden Canada. (de Havilland Canada, Avro Canada, et cetera)

Asuna could be the performance division. Although, the Sunfire name was tainted by whatever this is.

But Mercury is an American brand. America may of been a British colony but they didn’t join the commonwealth of nations.

Yes but Mercury Trucks were only sold in Canada.

That’s why I posted the pickup.

Okay I get you. Maybe Mercury as a van/truck division like Bedford was to Vauxhall.

Yep. The current SS and Caprice are Australian designed cars (Commodore and well, Caprice), while the Regal and Verano are British/German designed cars (rebadged Insigna and Astra Sedan). The Ampera, in the other hand is a American designed car (rebadged Volt and now Bolt).

Interesting. I didn't realize the Bolt went the opposite direction. I would have assumed it was some kind of global development effort...

From what I read, it was basically entirely developed in Michigan. There isn’t any Opel in the design language too, be on the inside or on the outside.

According to en.wp, they’re also assembled in the US and exported. That’s actually the most amazing part to me.

Canada has had “domestic” brands before - GM marketed Envoy, Acadian, Laurentian, McLaughlin-Buick, Passport, and Asuna there; while Ford had Meteor and Monarch.

I suppose they just never took off in a big way that made them sustainable, Canadians don’t seem to mind buying cars with US brands on them. Holden and Vauxhall were at least established companies before GM bought them, rather than “invented” from scratch.

Interestingly, at one point, GM was exporting Buicks from Canada to the UK and advertising them there as “Empire Built” in an effort to convince the British that owning a Buick was somehow the patriotic thing to do.

The main problem with all of those brands is that they really were just rebadged versions of cars you could already get. Although, the whole brand recognition thing is a big part of it too.

Interestingly, Pontiac also did the same thing in Australia. Sold RHD Parisiennes and I believe also Laurentians that were built in Canada. Perhaps people just wanted a car built in the Commonwealth, rather than somewhere like America or mainland Europe.

There used to be a much stronger spirit of community within the Commonwealth that I kind of feel has weakened over the years. I blame the EU.
